Wyatt and I are starting out from Nicasio to meet up with the Wednesday group at the Bear Valley Visitor Center for a ride out to the Pt Reyes Lighthouse. The run along Nicasio Valley Rd and Pt Reyes Petaluma Rd provides splendid views of the Nicasio Reservoir. The calm of the water creates gorgeous mirrored images of the surrounding hills and the low-lying fog hovering over the landscape.

Pt Reyes Petaluma Rd leads us to Pt Reyes Station from Hwy 1. We ride through the Olema marshes out towards the campground to Bear Valley Rd. We arrive at the Bear Valley Visitor Center by 10 AM to meet up with the group. There is ample parking with water and restrooms nearby.

We exit the Visitor Center and head north on Bear Valley Rd to Inverness on Sir Francis Drake Blvd. This 4 mile stretch of road goes along the western edge of Tomales Bay. The short climb out of Inverness begins after you pass Camino Del Mar, it’s less than a mile long with gradient ranges of 8-11%.

At the bottom of the descent, stay to the left to continue on Sir Francis Drake Blvd. The next 13.5 miles on Sir Francis Drake Blvd takes you through the beautiful Pt Reyes National Seashore. The road seems to go on and on with no end in sight!

You’ll ride through the many historic working dairy and cattle ranches with it’s old barns, farm houses and other historic structures. Grazing cows are dotted throughout the open grasslands of this very remote area.

Sir Francis Drake Blvd ends at the Pt Reyes Lighthouse; the surrounding ocean views are stunning and the expansive sandy beaches and rolling waves are a spectacular sight to see! The weather conditions are perfect too; sunny and warm with no winds!

The return on Sir Francis Drake Blvd back to Inverness always seems to be easier. It’s often that first climb out that gets you because of the longer stay at the Lighthouse. Once you get back to the intersection at Drakes Beach, the rolling flat terrain quickly takes you back to the short climb up and over the Inverness hill.

We continue on Sir Francis Drake Blvd to Hwy 1 into Pt Reyes Station for a very short break. We return on pt Reyes Petaluma Rd back to Nicasio Valley Rd into Nicasio.

Thanks to Deb for leading today’s ride-the weather was absolutely perfect!

The mighty lighthouse stands secure,
Undaunted by the restless sea;
Ravaged by the changing tides
And buffeted by winds blown free.
