Walt’s 85th Birthday Ride: Coyote Hills-Nike Hill

This ride heads SW from Union Landing to Coyote Hills Regional Park for a climb up along Meadowlark Trail aka Nike Hill to a military NIKE missile site. Enjoy the scenic hilltop views of the South Bay! Continue along the  Bayview Trail to Alameda Creek Trail for the return to Union Landing.

Exit Union Landing on Holly Way to Courthouse Dr.

Head south on Dyer St.

Meander through the residential neighborhoods on Regents Blvd to Lowry Rd.

Continue south on UnionCity Blvd and Ardenwood Blvd to Paseo Padre Pkwy.

Head west on Patterson Ranch Rd to Coyote Hills Regional Park. Coyote Hills Regional Park was dedicated to public use in 1967. Comprised of nearly 978 acres of marshland and rolling grassland covered hills, this busy park is located along the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, northwest of the cities of Fremont and Newark.*1

Take Bayview Trail through the rolling grassland to Dairy Glen Picnic Area.

Stop at Dairy Glen.

Continue on Bayview Trail to the Meadowlark Trail junction.

Go straight onto Meadowlark Trail aka “Nike Hill”. The climb is 0.7 miles with an average grade of 6% and steep pitches of 9-12%!

Enjoy the South Bay views from the top of Nike Hill!

The park’s rich and varied history also includes Mission and settler ranching and farming activities, salt production, a duck hunting club, a dairy, rock quarrying, a military NIKE missile site, and a biosonar research facility. Now a Regional Park, this area is preserved for recreation, and educational and nature experiences for all to enjoy. *1

Continue along the Bayview Trail to Red Hill Trail junction. Other attractions at Coyote Hills include the Marsh Boardwalk, and 3.5-mile Bay View Trail, a paved loop trail for hiking and bicycle riding.*1

Head east along the Alameda Creek Trail to Isherwood Way and Quarry Lakes Dr.

Return west on Alvarado-Niles Rd and San Andreas Dr to Union Landing Shopping Center.

Post ride lunch at Texas Roadhouse.
