Sonoma: Sweetwater Springs-Westside-Russian River Valley

This scenic ride heads east along the Russian River from Duncans Mills to Gurneville for the climb up Sweetwater Springs Rd. The road drops down through the rolling vineyards around Dry Creek Valley into the town of Healdsburg. Return west along the gorgeous Sonoma Wine Country on Westside Rd to River Rd. Travel through the redwoods along the Russian River into Monte Rio for a gorgeous jaunt along Moscow Rd to Duncans Mills.

Begin from Casini Ranch Campground.

Cross the Russian River on Moscow Rd to Hwy 116 E.

Turn right onto Hwy 116 E; the flat terrain follows the curvature of the redwood-studded Russian River from Duncans Mills to Guerneville.

Take Brookside Ln and 4th St and head north towards Armstrong Redwoods on Armstrong Woods Rd.

Continue on Sweetwater Springs Rd; this remote back road stretches around Mt Jackson for10.3 miles to its east end at Healdsburg. The first flat mile takes you through the woodlands along Redwood and Sweetwater Creeks.

At the 9 miles sign, the narrow road winds uphill towards the abandoned Sonoma Quicksilver Mines with grades of 9-11%.

As you near the switchback, the road kicks up for the next half mile to the first highpoint with steep grades of 12-17%!

Sweetwater Springs drops down for a short 0.3 mile to the farmhouse and old barn before rolling up to another climb.

The road continues winding up around the mountain to the summit at 1265 feet; it’s 1.3 miles with an average grade of 10% along with steep pitches 12-14%!

Sweetwater Springs descends for the next 4 miles through the beautiful lush riparian habitat along Porter Creek.

The road continues through the redwoods before heading uphill towards Denner Ridge.

The climb up along Denner Ridge to the highpoint at Puria Ranch is 0.8 mile with an average grade of 5.6%.

Sweetwater Springs winds down around the hilltop vineyards to Westside Rd.

Turn left on Westside and head north through the splendid Dry Creek Valley vineyards.

Mill St leads you into the town of Healdsburg.

Return on Westside Rd to Sweetwater Springs Rd.

Stay on Westside and continue on rolling terrain through the estate wineries and vineyards.

After crossing Porter Creek, the road kicks up for a short climb through the woods with grades of 6-8%.

The road drops down towards Wohler Rd and continues SW through the Russian River Valley vineyards to River Rd.

Go straight onto River Rd, the road continues westward along the Russian River Valley vineyards to the river resort towns of Rio Nido and Guerneville.

Take D St into Monte Rio and cross the green bridge to Main St.

Head NW on Moscow Rd; this gorgeous road follows the curvatures of the Russian River under a dense canopy of redwoods through the small riverside community.

Moscow Rd leads you out-of-town to the open meadows and campground along the Russian River.

This is a wonderful scenic ride through the beautiful redwoods along the Russian River; you’ll enjoy the remote climb from the old silver mine up to Mt Jackson and the gorgeous rolling vineyards around the Dry Creek and Russian River Valleys!
