This short loop goes south along the Contra Costa Canal Trail before heading east through Ygnacio Valley for the climbs up towards Lime Ridge and Crystyl Ranch. This route includes an out & back on MItchell Canyon Rd to Mt Diablo Mitchell Canyon staging area. Return west through the city streets of Concord back to Martinez.
Head out through the city streets of Martinez onto the Contra Costa Canal Trail off Taylor Blvd.
Take the Contra Costa Canal Trail from Pleasant Hill towards Heather Farm Park in Walnut Creek.
Continue on the Canal Trail to Oak Grove Rd.
Head east on Ygnacio Valley Rd; the road climbs up across Lime Ridge in Concord for 0.8 mile with an average grade of 6.2% before dropping down towards Crystyl Ranch.
Crystyl Ranch Rd is a wide boulevard that goes up along the east edge of Lime Ridge to the southern edge of the ridge; the road enters the residential neighborhoods around the private Crystyl Ranch Community in Concord. It’s a half mile ascent with grades of 6-9% from the fire station to the ridge top.
The climb offers phenomenal views of Clayton Valley and Mt Diablo!
Crystyl Ranch Rd continues around the subdivisions followed by a descent on Rolling Wood Way to Pine Hollow Rd.
Continue east on Pine Hollow Rd into the town of Clayton.
Turn right and head south on Mitchell Canyon Rd; the road exits the residential neighborhoods towards the Clayton Quarry.
The flat-rolling terrain leads to Mt Diablo State Park Mitchell Canyon.

Turn around and retrace your way back out on Mitchell Canyon Rd to Clyaton Rd.
Turn right on Clayton Rd to Old Downtown Clayton on Main St for a stop at The Grove.
Continue on Marsh Creek Rd and turn left on Center St towards the Oakhurst Country Club. The road name changes to Oakhurst Dr as it goes along the golf course and country club neighborhoods.
Oakhurst Rd drops down towards east Concord and name changes to Concord Blvd; this busy city street travels westward along the edge of town to Farm Bureau Rd.
The road cuts across Willow Pass Rd and name changes to E Olivera Rd as it goes past the Willow Pass Community Park and Pixieland Amusement Park.
Olivera Rd takes you across SR 242 to Peralta Rd towards the industrial area of Concord.
Head west on Arnold Industrial Way-this road is the designated SR4 Bikeway. It parallels Hwy 4 and takes you through the industrial areas from N Concord to Martinez.
The road name changes to Imhoff Rd as it crosses over the wetlands extending to Pacheco Creek to Blum Rd. Blum Rd takes you underneath I-680 onto Pacheco Blvd.
Head north on Pacheco Blvd and turn left for the stiff climb up Arnold Dr to the top at Glacier Dr. The road winds up along the Contra Costa County offices and residential neighborhoods followed by a descent to Fig Tree Ln.
This short urban ride will take you along the Canal Trail to the roads less traveled from Walnut Creek to Clayton and Concord to Martinez. You’ll enjoy the quiet climb up along Crystyl Ranch Rd and the grand views of Ygnacio Valley, Clayton Valley, Mitchell Canyon and Mt Diablo!
