Today we’re just hanging out with family for a short hike up a single track trail to the summit of Black Hill-one of the volcanic hills between Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo.

Begin this hike from the trailhead parking lot at the end of Upper State Park Rd in Morro Bay State Park. Go up the dirt trail to the immediate junction: turn left to continue uphill on Black Hill Trail.

The trail traverses along the hillside of Monterey pines with fantastic views of Morro Bay.

It continues winding up the hill through sage covered slopes with open views of the gorgeous bay!

Continue up the trail past the springtime bush monkeyflowers and sweet yellow clovers to the boulder covered summit of Black Hill.

The trail ends at the top of the hill with several rocky outcroppings; pick a spot and enjoy the panoramic views from different perspectives.

Enjoy the beautiful views of the network of canals at the estuary, the golden hills along Cuesta Ridge, the Morros and Morro Rock!

Turn around and retrace your steps back to the parking lot.

Lunch along the harbor at Morro Bay at Tognazzini’s Dockside Restaurant-they have a great outdoor patio with live music and it’s dog friendly too!

This short trek is a great option for those who are short on time or just want to enjoy the views without having to do the full hike from the Morro Bay State Park campground (3 miles round trip). It’s just enough to get you out and about in the morning before settling in for a nice leisurely lunch along the docks at Morro Bay. The girls are out of school at 2:30 PM-this is a wonderful bit of “me” time for the parents!

Stats:
0.5 Mile with 160′ of elevation gain
