This urban ride heads south on the Contra Costa Canal & Iron Horse Trails into Walnut Creek. Continue on Danville Blvd through Alamo to Danville and head east through Sycamore Valley to the private gated communities at Blackhawk. Head west through Green Valley and Stone Valley for a jaunt through the Roundhill Country Club neighborhoods. Descend Rudgear Rd to S Broadway and return to Martinez via the Iron Horse and Canal Trail.
Head out of Martinez on Arnold, Glacier and Center to Vine Hill, Morello and Taylor Blvd.
Continue south on the Iron Horse Trail to S Broadway and Rudgear Rd.
The flats on Danville Blvd rolls through the towns of Walnut Creek and Alamo to Danville. Continue through the downtown area on Front St to Hartz Way and ride along the residential neighborhoods around Laurel Dr.
The turn on Sycamore Valley Rd to Camino Tassajara takes you through the suburban neighborhoods in Danville. The flat miles goes pass the golden hills of Sycamore Valley Open Space and the displays of trees, plants and flowers at the Tassajara Nursery.
The short climb on Camino Tassajara rolls down towards the shopping centers around Blackhawk.
Turn left on Blackhawk Rd and continue through Green Valley along the tree-lined gated neighborhoods around Blackhawk.
The road name changes to Diablo Rd on the descent to Green Valley Rd. The two-lane road narrows with no shoulder; I suggest hopping onto the bike/ped trail at Fairway Dr.
Head north on Green Valley to Stone Valley for a quick stop at Oak Hill Park.
Meander through the neighborhoods on Miranda and Livorna to Lavender Dr and Rudgear Rd.
Descend Rudgear Rd onto S Broadway in Walnut Creek.
Take the Iron Horse Trail and Contra Costa Canal Trail back to Taylor Blvd in Pleasant Hill.
Continue on the Contra Costa Canal Trail from Taylor to Center Ave in Martinez. Return on Sequoia and Glacier back to Arnold and Fig Tree Ln.
This urban route is a great prep ride to keep your legs spinning along the valley flats and low rolling climbs. There’s also plenty of places along the route to stop for a quick coffee/tea or snacks-try it out!
