Click here to watch a short video of the descent-summit to South Gate Rd
Mt Diablo is one of my favorite local rides; it’s quality miles with quality climbing and quality views. Today’s loop goes up North Gate Rd to the Junction Ranger Station and up to the summit followed by a descent on South Gate Rd to Diablo Rd.
The climb up to the Junction Ranger Station from the North Gate Entrance is 6.5 miles with an average grade of 6%. The steepest section with 9-11% grades is the quarter mile stretch on the approach to the 1000′ sign near the Burma Trail head.
The climb on Summit Rd from the Junction Ranger Station is 4.5 miles with an average grade of 7%. The climb up “the wall” to the summit at the upper parking lot has steep grades of 13-18%!

Take the time to revel in the spectacular views from the summit-it’s a wonderful accomplishment to get up here and believe me it hurts every time! The biggest reward is not only the stellar views but the long winding descent back down the mountain-ENJOY!
Garmin Stats:
55.02 Miles with 4721′ of elevation gain
Max elevation: 3725′
Avg grade: 5%
Max grade: 18%
Weather: Excellent! Sunny and hot with mild NW winds. Temps ranged from the low 60’s to the mid 90’s
