Today is Phil’s birthday-he’s leading a ride up Mt Diablo via North Gate Rd to the summit and back.

We meet up at the Heather Farms parking lot in Walnut Creek.

DSCN8936-2

We take San Carlos Dr to Walnut Ave.

The flat one mile stretch on Walnut Ave leads to the Oak Grove circle.

We continue on North Gate Rd to the Mt Diablo North Gate Entrance.

From the park entrance, it’s a 6.5 mile climb up to the Junction Ranger Station.

The steepest segment is the quarter-mile stretch beginning at the 1000′ elevation sign near the Burma Trail.

The road winds around Diablo with fabulous views of the chaparral covered mountains.

The switchbacks above Diablo Ranch have a beautiful tight display of orange poppies on the upper slopes.

The climbing continues with fantastic views of the surrounding area.

There is a regroup at the Junction Ranger Station.

The climb on Summit Rd up to the summit is 4.5 miles which includes the steep 13-18% section on ‘the wall”.

The post ride get together is at the outdoor patio area in front of Sweet Affair Bakery at the Ygnacio Plaza Shopping Center. There’s plenty of chocolate cake and sunshine for everyone.

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY-PHIL!” Thanks for allowing us to share your special day and for the delicious cake!
