Yes-I’m doing it again-Lake Herman Rd! Another day with a different group of people.
This route starts in Martinez and crosses the Benicia-Martinez Bridge over to Benicia. We meander through the waterfront along Benicia Marina out to the 1st St Pier. The pier offers fantastic views of Carquinez Strait, the Carquinez Bridge, Franklin Hills, the oil refineries and the Benicia-Martinez Bridge.
We ride the multi-use path through the Benicia State Recreation Area out to Columbus Pkwy and Lake Herman Rd. The picnic lunch stop is at Lake Herman; porta-potties are available here but the water fountain has no water.
Lake Herman Rd continues east to Lopes Rd with fabulous views of Suisun Bay and the Mothball Fleet with Mt Diablo in the background.
We head north along Lopes Rd and return south on Goodyear Rd; it’s a nice out and back along the I-680 corridor with views of the rolling green hillsides and the marshlands of Grizzly Wildlife Area.
The return to the bridge crossing includes going down Industrial Way to Park Rd. There is a coffee stop at the Starbuck’s on Main St in Martinez. The ride concludes with a short jaunt through the residential neighborhoods before arriving back at Holiday Highlands Park.
