Today’s ride starts at the Lake Temescal parking lot in Oakland. We take the path through the park out to Broadway Terrace and continue along the residential neighborhoods and business district of Montclair to La Salle Ave.

We cross Park Blvd on Trafalgar Pl to the climb up Monterey Blvd to Joaquin Miller Rd. The turn on Hedge Ln takes us to a popular local cycling route known as BBR; Burdeck, Butters and Robinson. The 1.5+ mile stretch through this Oakland neighborhood meanders around Butters Canyon. The short steep climb on Butters is on a single narrow lane road through lush natural growth along the canyon.

Robinson Rd leads us back out onto Joaquin Miller Rd for the brief regroup at the top at Skyline Blvd. The roll down Skyline brings us to the fabulous descent on Redwood Rd. This is one of the best descents in the Bay Area; the smooth pavement gently sweeps through the redwoods along the southern end of Redwood Regional Park.

The climb on Redwood Rd begins at the intersection at Pinehurst Rd; it’s almost 4 miles up to the top at Marciel Rd. The gradient starts gently at grades of 1.5-2% and increases to gradient ranges of 5-7% after you pass Bort Meadows. The sweeping descent drops us down to our lunch stop at Willow Park Golf Course.

The Snack Shop at the golf course serves sandwiches and other food items along with hot and cold beverages. Water and restrooms are available too.

The post lunch route returns up Redwood Rd for the short climb up south Pinehurst Rd. On the descent, you get some fabulous views of the surrounding landscape around San Leandro Reservoir! We continue north on Pinehurst Rd at the intersection with Canyon Rd. The first few miles on lower Pinehurst follows the old railroad grade through the small town of Canyon. This is one of the most beautiful roads in the area; the San Leandro Creek flows along the towering redwoods, dense trees and brushes. The last quarter-mile of Pinehurst up to Skyline Blvd is steep with gradient ranges of 9-12%!

The fog thickens on the return along Skyline Blvd for the descent on Tunnel Rd back to the Lake Temescal parking lot.

Thanks to Carla and Virginia for leading this ride! It was good to be out riding despite the cold temps.
