I’m leading a ride today that starts at the Orinda BART station parking lot. Michael and I head out from home to Orinda where we encounter hundreds of runners of all ages on Mt Diablo Blvd participating in the Lafayette Reservoir 10k Run.

Riders are slowly trickling in at the as the minutes tick away towards our departure time of 10 AM. There is a last minute minor flat repair on Sally’s bike before the start of the ride-thanks to Mark for helping!

We exit the parking lot and head north on Camino Pablo to Bear Creek Rd for the climb up the backside of Papa Bear aka Pumphouse Grade. This steady climb has gradient ranges from 5-7%.

The descent on Papa Bear takes us pass Briones Park followed by several short rolling climbs on Mama Bear.

The straight descent from the top of Mama Bear becomes a gentle downhill all the way to Alhambra Valley Rd.  The rolling terrain along Alhambra Valley Rd to Pinole Valley Rd takes us towards the outskirts of Pinole.

Pinole Peet’s is located at the Pinole Valley Shopping Center off Pinole Valley Rd. Watch for incoming  and outgoing traffic-it’s a busy area!

We return on Pinole Valley Rd for the short climb up Castro Ranch Rd.

The gentle climb up San Pablo Dam Rd takes us back to Orinda. It’s an easy flat 2.5 miles back to the BART station from Camino Pablo and Wildcat Canyon.

Michael and I take the St Stephens Trail to Lafayette and climb up and over Taylor Blvd back to Martinez.

Thanks to everyone for joining us on this short ride out to Peet’s! It was a beautiful day to be outdoors.
