Today’s hilly short loop takes us out to Stinson Beach via Muir Woods Rd and Hwy 1. We meet up at the Mill Valley Safeway and head north on Miller Ave to Throckmorton and Cascade Dr towards the Old Mill Park.

The climbing starts immediately as you turn onto Marion Ave; it’s a quiet stretch of road through a residential neighborhood nestled among redwood groves. We continue on Edgewood to Sequoia Valley Rd; the average gradient on these roads range from 4.5-5% with steeper sections hitting 9-10%.

We cross Panoramic Hwy and continue straight ahead for the twisty descent on Muir Woods Rd. There is a brief regroup at the entrance of Muir Woods National Park.

The next few miles on Muir Woods Rd take us through the valley for the climb up Hwy 1. The first mile up to the ridge has an average grade of 8% with steeper pitches of 10-11%!

The views from the top of the ridge are spectacular!

The terrain along Hwy 1 to Stinson Beach is a series of rollers that weave in and out along the mountainsides. The views certainly don’t disappoint even with the lingering coastal fog-it just makes everything that much more dramatic!

Our lunch stop is at the Stinson Beach picnic area. You can purchase a variety of fast food at the Parkside Snack Bar located next to the entrance of the beach.

After lunch, we return to Hwy 1 and head south for a different perspective of the coastline. It’s stunning gorgeous from both ways! The climbs along this 5 mile section have a bit more bite to it going from this direction-the last stretch up to the the top of the ridge has grades ranging from 9-11%!

Before dropping down Hwy 1 towards Muir Woods, we take a detour at Muir Beach Overlook. You can walk down the steps to the end of the point and admire the views of Muir Beach, the cliffs and the Pacific Ocean-for today, it’s not feasible for us to do with the bike.

We exit the cliff side park and continue south on Hwy 1 down to Muir Beach. The climbing resumes after passing through the little town of Muir Beach. The next 2.5 miles up to Panoramic has an average grade of 4.5%; the first section is the steepest with grades ranging from 8-10%, the road eases up along the back ridge with gentler grades of 6-7%.

The remaining 2.5 miles on Hwy 1 is a fast windy descent back down to Mill Valley.

Thanks to Pat & Chris for leading this fabulous ride along Hwy 1 to Stinson! The ocean views are the best!

  1. Do you stop along the way to snap the pictures? Or do you take them while still riding?

John, 99% of all the photos posted on this blog are taken while I’m on the move, riding my bike. I take hundreds of photos on a ride and they all don’t turn out. So the magic of digital photography allows me to take as many as I can and delete all the bad shots. Nancy
