Grizzly Peak Cyclists honors the memory of Jane Bailowitz with a memorial ride along her favorite route; The Bears Loop, followed by a special gathering at the Island Picnic Area in Tilden Park.

Michael and I arrive early at Island to meet up with Jean and Jane M to set up the area for the gathering. Many hands make light work!

The ride meets up at the Summit Reservoir at the intersection of Spruce & Grizzly Peak Blvd in Berkeley.

We head east on Wildcat Canyon Rd along the outskirt of Tilden Regional Park.

There is a regroup at the bottom of Wildcat Canyon & Camino Pablo.

The route continues north on San Pablo Dam Rd with another regroup at the parking lot off Castro Ranch Rd.

The group is nicely strung out along the climb up Castro Ranch Rd.

We make a right turn onto Alhambra Valley Rd; the rolling terrain on this 2.74 mile stretch of road takes us to Bear Creek Rd. The golden grassy hillsides still has some displays of yellow wildflowers-what a gorgeous sight!

The climb up Mama bear is under a mile with an average grade of about 7%. The regroup at the top allows us fabulous views of Briones Reservoir.

The two humps on Mama Bear bring us to the climb up Papa Bear; it’s under a mile with an average grade of 7%.

The descent down Pumphouse Grade is always a blast! Just know that Baby Bear is waiting for you at the very end up to Camino Pablo.

Another brief regroup at the top and onwards we go-up Wildcat Canyon Rd!

We arrive at Inspiration Point-Jane’s favorite stop in Tilden Park.

The ride ends at Island Picnic Area where the Gathering begins.

Jane’s celebratory cake-she’s still climbing!

Mingling of GPC members, family and friends of Jane. Love and food always brings people together.

Guest speakers sharing their memories of Jane.

Amid all the tears and sadness-we can always have CAKE!

Much thanks to everyone involved with the planning of the ride and the gathering! It was the perfect day to be amongst family and friends to celebrate a life well lived! May we all dare to live our lives with the great passion it deserves!

31 miles with 2469′ of elevation gain
~45+ people in attendance for the ride
~75-80 people in attendance for the gathering

Weather: ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! Sunny and warm with temps ranging from the low 70’s to high 80’s

Sadly missed along life’s way,
quietly remembered everyday………
No longer in our life to share,
but in our hearts, you’re always there.
