Today’s club ride meets up at the graveled lot with the big eucalyptus tree at the intersection of Ramal Rd & Hwy 12/121 in Sonoma.

We head south on Ramal Rd and Duhig Rd to ride miles and miles with the many local vineyards serving as the backdrop to our autumn ride up Mt Veeder. There are green and blacks grapes hanging from the vines amongst the rows and rows of plantings.

The terrain is mostly flat with a couple of short climbs that takes us up and over to Hwy 12/121 and Old Sonoma Rd.

We take a left onto Dealy Ln and Henry Rd. The short climb through the vineyards brings us to Buhman Rd. The whole area is very beautiful; the foliage  are starting to change colors and the the hills are still abundant with many plantings.

The one climb up on Buhman takes us through an residential neighborhood of Napa and onto Browns Valley Rd.

The pavement on Redwood Rd has recently been redone and it’s nice and smooth. There are a few old barns and farmhouses back here along with several vineyards. You can hear water trickling along Redwood Creek as you ride under the canopy of trees. Take the time to enjoy the quiet and peaceful surroundings this area has to offer; it’s absolutely wonderful!

At the Y intersection, we go straight to continue on Mt Veeder Rd. There are a few steep sections on this stair step climb to the summit. The last half mile is tough on a hot day; it has full exposure to the sun with little to no shade. The gradient ranges from 9-10% and maxes out at 12% near the top at mile marker 4.25.

The descent on the back side of Veeder is on pretty rough pavement although it looks like some spots have been recently patched.

We continue on Dry Creek Rd for the next 9+ miles back to Napa for our lunch stop at Browns Valley Market. The old concrete seating areas has been replaced with new plastic/metal type picnic tables with attached benches. There is an accessible outdoor water spigot for water and restrooms are available inside the market and or the yogurt shop.

After lunch, we continue on Thompson Ave to Congress Valley Rd and Old Sonoma Rd. The scenery here is gorgeous; the hills are abound with vineyards! We get onto Hwy 12/121 for a short section before making the next turn on Los Carneros Ave to South Ave and Cuttings Wharfs Rd.

The turn on Las Amigas Rd has us on rolling terrain for the next several miles til the next turn back onto Duhig Rd. It’s fabulous here; more vineyards galore to our left and right; green, yellow, and oranges shades of neatly planted rows of grapes!

The next 5 miles on Duhig and Ramal brings us back to the parking lot.

Thanks to Deb for leading today’s ride; what a great Autumn ride!
